Northeast milk production is steady. With the start of the New Year,
milk is available for manufacturing needs. Some market participants
report milk loads into balancing operations are fairly steady, as
bottling facilities are pulling milk into their pipelines. Milk
production in the Southeast is steady to rising at a consistent pace.
Throughout the East, frigid temperatures have emerged, creating
hauling delays and frozen piping issues in manufacturing operations.
Coming off the holidays, industry contacts communicate they are
progressing to get back to normalcy. Cream multiples have gained back
value this week ranging 1.00-1.15. Cream is available but at higher
prices, as the demand from manufacturers is increased. Condensed skim
is unchanged from last week as it is available for Class II and IV
production needs. The DMN December average for Northeast Class II
cream was $2.6102, compared to $2.6326 a year ago. The DMN December
monthly average for Northeast Class II condensed skim was $0.7520,
compared to $0.8482 a year ago. According to the DMN National Retail
Report-Dairy, for the period of December 29-January 4, the U.S.
weighted average advertised price for the half gallon pack size milk
was $2.27, down 13 cents compared to last week, but up 7 cents from
last year. In the Northeast, the weighted average price for the egg
nog half-gallon pack size was $4.40, up 19 cents from the previous
week.
