NORTHEAST WHOLESALE CHEESE:                                      

With the arrival of the New Year, milk is adequate throughout the 
region for manufacturing. Cheese makers report they had plenty of milk 
over the holidays to cover production needs. Colder temperatures 
continue to linger in areas of the Northeast causing some hauling 
delays. Overall, cheese output is strong and inventories have 
increased. Orders into retail and food service sectors are steady to 
increased, as schools are heading back into session. Cheese barrel 
prices on the CME Group have simmered, but on other pricing indices, 
the barrel price is moderately higher than the block price. The 
Northeast wholesale cheddar and Muenster prices increased $0.0525, but 
the process cheese price declined $0.0200. The Grade A Swiss price is 
steady. The DMN Northeast December 2017 monthly average price for cheddar 
blocks is $2.1128, compared to $2.3384 one year ago. Processed 5# sliced 
average price is $1.9511, compared to $2.0463 one year ago. At Tuesday's 
CME Group trading, daily cash prices saw barrels closed at $1.4275, up 
$0.0075, and blocks closed at $1.5250, increased $0.0375 from last 
Tuesday. The CME Group December 2017 monthly average price for barrels 
was $1.5426, compared to $1.6132 a year ago; blocks' average price was 
$1.4900, down from $1.7335 a year ago. The DMN National Retail Report-
Dairy, for December 29-January 4, noted the U.S. weighted average 
advertised price for 8 ounce cheese block was $2.17, decreased 3 cents 
from the previous week, but up 10 cents from last year. The U.S. 
weighted average advertised price of 8 ounce cheese shreds was $2.12, 
up 4 cents from last week, but down 8 cent from a year ago. Northeast 
region's weighted average advertised price for 8 ounce cheese blocks 
was $2.06, 11 cents below the U.S. average, with a regional price 
range of $1.79-$3.00. The Southeast region's average price for 8 oz. 
cheese blocks was $2.19, 2 cents above the average U.S. price, with a 
regional price range of $1.98-$2.99. The Northeast average price for 8 
oz. cheese shreds was $2.08, down 4 cents from the U.S. average price, 
with a regional price range of $1.49-$3.00. In the Southeast, the 
average price for 8 oz. shreds was $2.09, 3 cents below the U.S. 
average, with prices ranging $1.98-$2.99.
