MD DA230 Fluid Milk and Cream Review - Central

MADISON, WI. December 7, 2017 (REPORT 49)

In recent weeks, Central U.S. fluid milk contacts have affirmed that there is
an unambiguous increase in recent milk production. Bottlers are placing
relatively heavy orders, as some contacts suggest this will be the final solid
week for orders in the year. There is some anxiety among contacts that the
second half of December could become hectic, particularly as hauling/trucks are
becoming more and more difficult to hire during the holidays. Cheese plant
managers report receiving discounted milk offers, and some expect discounted
milk prices to remain throughout the rest of the year. Cream is readily
available for all uses. Cream suppliers point out that contracting for 2018 is
at or near completion. Reported cream multiples for Class II ranged from 1.22
to 1.29. The DMN monthly average of the range price series for Upper Midwest
Class II cream during November 2017 was $2.8671, compared to $2.4513 a year
ago. The DMN National Retail Report-Dairy for December 1-7 noted the national
weighted average advertised price for one gallon of milk was $2.34, down 95
cents from last week and 12 cents lower than a year ago. The weighted average
regional prices in the Midwest and South Central were $2.03 and $2.51,
respectively. The NASS Dairy Products report noted October U.S. regular (hard)
ice cream production totaled 58.4 million gallons, down 2.5 percent from last
year. January-October U.S. production totals 672.7 million gallons, 1.8 percent
below 2016 during the same period. October production in the Central region
totaled 32.7 million gallons, 0.4 percent above a year ago.
