DRY WHEY - WEST

Western whey prices shifted lower. Some manufacturers are eager to clear
sizeable volumes of whey prior to the end of the calendar year. While a few
processors have been able to move blocks of whey in an effort to keep
inventories in check, industry contacts say there is a lot of whey in the
warehouses. Many secondary markets are satisfied and are in no rush to
contract for early 2018. There is a feeling among customers that whey is
readily available on the spot market and any offer may come with some type of
price concession. Production is generally steady and following along cheese
production trends. The DMN monthly average of the mostly price series for
West dry whey during November was $0.3213 compared to $0.3562 one month ago
and $0.3759 a year ago. NASS reports that October 2017 U.S. human dry whey
production, 79.1 million pounds, is down 3.1 percent from a year ago, and
down 11.7 percent from September 2017. The Western region produced 20.5
million pounds of human dry whey during October, down 15.7 percent from last
year, and down 29.4 percent from last month. Month ending stocks for U.S.
human dry whey, at 92.0 million pounds, are 54.4 percent higher than one year
ago, but down 13.5 percent from September 2017.
