Western Europe butter prices weakened. Some of the higher prices are
recorded in Germany, Italy and France. Prices in the Netherlands tended to be
slightly lower. Nevertheless, prices are higher than during most of the first
part of 2017.
Early December internal EU retail demand for packaged butter is brisk. Most
stores stocked coolers for the end of year during November, so they generally do
not need to add butter now. Contracting for early 2018 deliveries has slowed
because buyers, encouraged by recent weaker prices, tend to seek lower price
commitments than manufacturers are ready to make.
Manufacturers are moving ahead planning for anticipated increased exports
commencing in January. Overall, butter markets are under some pressure resulting
from recently trending lower prices.
EU butter production this year, January-September, was 3.7 percent lower
than the same period last year according to CLAL. Among primary producing
countries, butter production for this year compared to last year was: Germany,
-4.84 percent; France, -7.40 percent; and Ireland, +9.73 percent.
