Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 03/08/2018

Receipts: 1,182 Last Week: 3,897 Year Ago: 2,646

Compared to last week: All feeder cattle were too lightly
tested to develop any market trend. Demand for feeder calves
was mostly good for cattle to develop into yearlings. Heavy
weight feedlot ready calves sold with mostly light demand this
sale. Quality today was plain to average and noticeably lower
than last week. CME positions slipped lower again today as every
contract from current through January of 2019 traded over 2.00
lower. Market activity was mostly slow. Weigh up cows sold on
moderate to good demand for moderate offerings. Packers were
active in purchasing cows both to feed and to kill. Slaughter
cows sold unevenly steady on boning and lean cows, while breaking
cows sold with lower undertones compared to last weeks light test.
Cow quality this week was mixed. Both higher and lower quality cows
were seen this week compared to last. Demand for feeding cows was
mostly good as packers and feeding buyers both purchased cows
to feed. A portion of the fed cow offering returned to the country
to finish feeding. Fed cows this week were mostly full and many
were carrying tag and big bags. Yielding conditions were
average to below average. Feeding cows sold fully steady with
last week. 2 year olds to young age cows suitable to rebreed sold
steady. Slaughter bulls sold unevenly steady as quality was mixed
this week. The feeder cattle offering was 54 percent steers and bulls,
46 percent heifers with 46 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today supply
consisted of 34 percent feeder cattle, 25 percent slaughter cows, 2
percent slaughter bulls, 36 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows
returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. Next
sale is Thursday March 15th 2018.
